Abstract

Occupational therapists' and occupational therapy students' perceptions of the sustainability analysis grid for the "eating a meal" occupation to support its application in the Quebec context

Context: Considering that human occupations are largely responsible for the climate crisis, occupational therapists, as occupation specialists, are key actors in supporting sustainable occupational transitions. To this end, Thiébaut and colleagues (2023) have developed a grid to analyze the sustainability of the occupation “having a meal”, which has been tested and evaluated by students in France. A research project was conducted to promote its applicability to the Quebec context.

Aim: The aim was to adapt the grid to the Quebec context by improving its clarity, user-friendliness, exhaustiveness and relevance.

Method: Three focus groups were conducted with occupational therapists and occupational therapy students on their experience of using the grid with a surrounding person. A content analysis of the verbatims allowed to collect participants’ perceptions of the grid according to the criteria identified.

Results: Twenty persons (n = 20) took part in the study : eight occupational therapists, two occupational therapy students and the ten persons accompanied during mealtimes. Overall, participants felt that the grid was relevant. In terms of clarity, user-friendliness, and exhaustiveness, suggestions for improving the grid were put forward.

Conclusion: The improved grid proves to be useful instrument for occupational therapy training programs. It constitutes a first clinical resource targeting the occupation of “having a meal” to support sustainable occupational transitions for people wishing to reduce their ecological footprint.
