Abstract

A Photovoice on capabilities of homeless sheltered in third-place

Context: Faced with a housing system that limits the capabilities of homeless people, temporary urbanism proposes shelter in third places as a new solution.

Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the influence of this type of third-place on the capabilities of homeless sheltered people.

Method: A Photovoice based on the capability approach was carried out in a temporary third-place providing shelter.

Results: Twelve themes emerged. The themes were analyzed through the axes of integration into the territory, control of the environment, engagement in meaningful occupations, fulfilling social relationships, quality of place and hope.

Conclusion: Third-place in temporary occupation seems to be a possible shelter solution to support capabilities, without solving the problems linked to the low quality and social control of traditional collective homeless shelter.
